Position Purpose:
The Vice President of HSE is responsible for developing and implementing long-term strategies and overseeing short-term solutions to mitigate risks associated with land transportation and ensure the safe, sustainable, and environmentally responsible operation of the company’s network. This role provides leadership in safety culture, regulatory compliance, environmental responsibility, and risk mitigation, ensuring company-wide adherence to industry best practices while integrating the latest innovations in safety technology and sustainability initiatives.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership: Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive safety and environmental responsibility strategies, establishing industry-leading standards while aligning with company business objectives and sustainability goals.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and other relevant federal, state, and international regulations. Maintain up-to-date policies, procedures, and training programs.
- Safety Program Development: Institute best practices, including benchmarking, behavior-based safety programs, and predictive analytics, ensuring their effective implementation and acceptance across all levels of the organization.
- Audit & Compliance Oversight: Regularly audit and assess safety programs for effectiveness, ensuring adherence to company-wide and operational standards. Lead responses to regulatory audits, compliance reviews, and customer safety evaluations.
- Driver & Fleet Safety: Oversee driver training programs, qualification processes, vehicle safety specifications, and behavior monitoring, leveraging real-time safety technologies and AI-driven predictive analytics to enhance fleet safety performance.
- Incident Investigation & Risk Mitigation: Lead accident investigations, analyze trends, and develop corrective action plans using root cause analysis and data-driven insights to reduce incidents and improve overall safety performance.
- Technology & Innovation: Implement advanced safety technologies, such as In-Vehicle Monitoring Systems (IVMS), AI-driven safety monitoring, IoT-based hazard detection, and predictive modeling to enhance hazard detection and real-time risk mitigation.
- Environmental Responsibility & Sustainability: Partnering with customer base to drive corporate sustainability initiatives, ensuring compliance with environmental laws and integrating sustainable business practices.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with operations, sales, marketing, and legal teams to ensure safety initiatives align with business needs. Represent the company in customer, industry, and regulatory meetings, shaping industry standards through participation in key safety associations.
- Emergency Preparedness & Business Continuity: Develop and maintain emergency response plans and Business Continuity Plans (BCP) to ensure operational resilience in case of major incidents, including supply chain disruptions, environmental disasters, and cybersecurity threats.
- Leadership & Culture: Foster a strong safety culture by leading and mentoring internal safety teams, promoting awareness and accountability at all levels of the organization, and advocating for continuous improvement in safety performance.
Qualifications:
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in safety management, Environmental Science, Transportation, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience). Advanced degrees or certifications preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in transportation safety, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Expertise in DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA regulations, and international safety and environmental standards such as ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
- Experience in accident investigation, root cause analysis, predictive analytics, and corrective action implementation.
- Strong leadership, communication, and advocacy skills to drive a culture of safety and influence industry stakeholders.
- Proficiency in safety management systems, AI-driven data analytics, and real-time risk assessment tools.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Director of Safety (CDS), or similar preferred credentials.
- Willingness to travel extensively across company operations and represent the company in industry and regulatory forums.
