Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage end-to-end payroll operations for a multi-state workforce across weekly and bi-weekly pay cycles
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a payroll team, driving accountability and performance
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws, including complex jurisdictions (e.g., California wage and hour regulations)
  • Oversee complex payroll elements, including bonuses, commissions, and equity compensation (RSUs and stock options)
  • Manage payroll tax filings, reconciliations, and regulatory compliance across all jurisdictions
  • Partner with HR, Finance, and Legal to ensure accurate compensation structures, benefits deductions, and reporting
  • Support and lead internal and external audits; contribute to SOX compliance and internal control frameworks (preferred)
  • Oversee year-end payroll processes, including W-2s, 1099s, and related filings
  • Evaluate and improve payroll systems, processes, and controls to enhance efficiency and scalability
  • Ensure proper handling of multi-state taxation, including unemployment insurance, reciprocity, and local tax requirements
  • Resolve complex payroll issues and employee inquiries with a high level of service
  • Maintain and document payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Manage relationships with payroll vendors and system providers


Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of payroll experience, including 2+ years in a leadership or supervisory role
  • Proven experience managing multi-state payroll across a large, distributed workforce
  • Strong knowledge of payroll tax regulations, wage and hour laws, and compliance requirements
  • Experience with equity compensation, including RSUs and stock options, and related tax implications
  • Experience operating in a complex, high-growth environment
  • Proficiency with payroll systems (e.g., UKG)
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in healthcare, particularly DME or similarly regulated environments
  • Experience supporting SOX compliance and audit-intensive environments
  • Deep knowledge of complex state payroll laws, especially California
  • CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) certification
  • Experience scaling payroll operations in a multi-state, high-growth organization
