BackMaintenance Technician

General Purpose:
The objective of the Maintenance Technician is to oversee the day-to-day operations of Calvary Cemetery as instructed by employee’s Immediate Supervisor, including but not limited to grounds/facilities beautification and maintenance and preparation of graves. This employee is expected to provide a Christian, compassionate and professional personality in all aspects of day-to-day operations, with complete confidentiality. The person in this position must be enthusiastic and eager to work with all people and must be a team player who will share and participate in the vision and goals of St. Genevieve Parish and Calvary Cemetery. The Maintenance Technician must follow all diocesan, parish, and Calvary Cemetery policies, procedures and regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform general administrative duties:
- Possess necessary cemetery skills and familiarity with all office equipment, cleaning supplies, paperwork, distribution permits to vault companies, receipt books, and ability to learn and access computer cemetery program to accurately locate gravesites and/or to locate persons buried on the property.
- Work with supervisor to ensure all record keeping is done within established procedures and with adequate safeguards to ensure accuracy.
- Organize in preparation of funeral services by selling burial plots, etc.
- Perform various field duties:
- Responsible for overall presentation and appearance of the cemetery which includes: mowing grass, pruning shrubs, trimming trees, and planting / maintaining landscaping.
- Responsible for shutting off and/or flushing water system in preparation for inclement weather, per direction of supervisor.
- Properly ensures accuracy of interment and entombment, accurately locating proper graves sites; measuring and marking sites for excavation.
- Operating a variety of equipment including lawn mowers, tractors, blowers, casket lift, etc.; performing routine maintenance and repair of equipment as required.
- Repairing other equipment as needed.
- Follow all safety rules and regulations, notifying Immediate Supervisor of any safety concerns.
- Maintain shop area in a safe and clean manner.
- Assist in training on equipment used in the maintenance of the cemetery grounds, per direction of supervisor.
- Perform seasonal functions and operate equipment to perform maintenance functions as needed.
- Determine purchasing needs for the department, i.e., maintenance supplies and related inventory.
- Oversee the work of head stone and vault companies.
- General maintenance and overall handman tasks.
- All other duties, as directed by the Pastor and/or Cemetery Director.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of six months of grounds keeping or landscaping experience required.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters.
- Ability to work with a variety of constituents including the public, contractors, funeral home personnel, etc.
- Considerable knowledge of maintenance equipment; landscape and water systems; of hazards and related safety precautions associated with equipment operations; of interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to respond to public questions; explain cemetery procedures and policies; assist with funerals by directing procession and coordinating cemetery activities, asneeded/directed.
- Good organizational skills and must be capable of working independently and be able to effectively manage one’s time.
- Multi-task oriented, accurate, thorough, punctual and cooperative; must follow all parish and office policies, procedures and regulations.
- Must be able to facilitate communications and act as a minister of hospitality to the parish community and other visitors to Calvary Cemetery.
- Ability to perform outlined tasks with minimal supervision.
- Cognitive skills as needed to complete tasks, including abilities such as learning, remembering, focusing, categorizing and integrating information for decision making, problem solving and comprehending.
Qualifications:

- This position may be exposed to chemicals, dust, dirt, and bacteria.

- Employee is occasionally required to sit.
- Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to the performance of the job. Common eye, hand and finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instruction, and good judgment.
- This position may require reporting to work before or remaining after regular hours, with occasional weekend work, as needed/directed by the Pastor and/or the Cemetery Director.
- To accomplish job duties, this position could expose employee to all of the weather elements; including rain, sleet, snow, extremely cold and hot weather
- Frequent local travel required in the normal course of job performance.
- If employee operates a cemetery vehicle, the employee must have a valid driver’s license with proof of insurance
