The Environmental Engagement & Conservation Coordinator is responsible for delivering dynamic, hands-on programming that engages visitors in environmental stewardship and watershed education. This includes leading tours, caring for exhibit spaces and ambassador animals, managing canoe and boat-based programs, and organizing events and activities that support ecological literacy and community involvement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Interpretation & Public Engagement

  • Lead interpretive tours in the Watershed Exhibit and Rain Garden areas.
  • Facilitate guided canoe paddles, canoe lessons, and tour boat rides for visitors, school groups, and during special events.
  • Deliver water testing labs, environmental crafts, and workbook activities for school programs and general audiences.
  • Visit local schools to deliver presentations on environmental topics and promote site programs.
  • Assist with developing and leading Earth Day events and other conservation-focused community programs.
  • Oversee the management, communication, distribution, and collection of BVD’s Trash/Recycle Bin program.

Exhibit and Site Maintenance

  • Perform upkeep and basic maintenance of the Watershed Exhibit and Rain Garden.
  • Oversee the Rocket Composter, ensuring functionality and incorporating it into educational programming.
  • Assist with greenhouse operations and native plant propagation.
  • Support the on-site gardener with seasonal planting and maintenance tasks as requested by the Director.

Animal and Resource Care

  • Provide daily care for ambassador animals in and around the Watershed Exhibit, ensuring that the best practices of health and safety standards are met.
  • Regularly update and restock educational handouts and community resource materials in the Watershed exhibit space.

Program Development & Administration

  • Coordinate logistics for conservation events and collaborate with other departments for special programming.
  • Conduct grant research and assist with fulfillment of grant-based project goals.
  • Support the recruitment, training, and management of needed volunteers for programs and events.
  • Collaborate with other departments, including summer camp, special events, programming, etc.
  • Fulfill other needs as directed by Vermilionville Senior Director, in line with the focus and mission of the Bayou Vermilion District.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or greater in ecology, environmental science, education or similar/related field.
  • Experience in environmental science, education, natural resource management, or related field.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be comfortable working outdoors in various conditions in south Louisiana and able to lift/move equipment as needed.
  • Experience in interpretive programming, outdoor education, or paddling instruction preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification and paddling safety credentials preferred (or willingness to obtain).
