POSITION OVERVIEW
The Dental Laboratory Manager, reporting to the owner, provides strategic leadership for all laboratory operations while promoting team development, quality excellence, and business growth. This position orchestrates daily production, establishes quality assurance systems, implements new technologies, and builds client relationships to ensure the laboratory delivers exceptional dental prosthetics while meeting business objectives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Leadership & Team Development (30%)
- Directly supervise laboratory supervisors, senior technicians, and administrative staff as assigned
- Establish clear performance expectations and goals aligned with laboratory objectives
- Conduct regular performance evaluations including ongoing feedback and formal reviews
- Identify skill gaps and create targeted professional development opportunities for staff
- Create and implement comprehensive training programs for new and existing employees
- Establish and implement effective recruitment strategies and succession planning to build and maintain a skilled technical team
- Facilitate and lead leadership and team meetings to ensure clear communication, alignment on goals, and effective decision-making
- Monitor productivity metrics, work hours, and performance indicators to recognize excellence, identify improvement areas, and manage the disciplinary process when necessary
- Foster a collaborative culture that emphasizes quality, innovation, and employee engagement while maintaining a positive work environment that supports continuous improvement
Operations & Quality Management (25%)
- Establish and maintain systems and protocols for efficient laboratory operations including quality assurance, inventory control, and production scheduling
- Oversee daily production to ensure dental products are fabricated accurately and delivered on time
- Implement lean manufacturing principles to maximize productivity and reduce waste
- Develop or implement production tracking and quality control systems, analyzing production reports to detect and resolve problems
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, infection control protocols, and safety guidelines
- Maintain stringent infection control and case management standards
Business Development & Client Relations (25%)
- Develop and implement marketing strategies to increase laboratory visibility and client acquisition
- Build and nurture strong relationships with dental practices through regular communication
- Collaborate with dentists to ensure patient satisfaction with final prosthetics
- Host and participate in workshops and other events to showcase laboratory expertise
- Create and implement client feedback systems to continuously improve service quality
- Monitor market trends and competitor offerings to maintain competitive advantage
Strategic Growth & Innovation (20%)
- Lead initiatives to expand laboratory capabilities, including dental implant and fully digital removable departments
- Research and evaluate advanced technologies for potential implementation
- Develop partnerships with suppliers and vendors to source high-quality materials and equipment
- Create standard operating procedures for areas as required
- Ensure systems align with industry standards and other regulatory requirements
- Develop and manage department budgets, including resource allocation and cost control
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- May occasionally be required to demonstrate techniques or assist with complex cases
- Full-time position with flexible hours to accommodate production schedules
- Potential for occasional travel to industry events, continuing education, or client sites
- May require periodic on-call availability to address urgent production or equipment issues
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Qualifications:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 5 years of experience in dental lab operations, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role
- Knowledge of dental prosthetics manufacturing processes and quality standards
- Experience with digital dentistry technologies and CAD/CAM systems
- Strong understanding of dental materials, their properties, and applications
- Demonstrated proficiency with inventory management systems
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements affecting dental laboratories
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, dental technology, or related field
- NADL Certificate in Dental Laboratory Management
- CDT (Certified Dental Technician) certification
- Experience implementing digital workflow solutions
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles
- Experience with dental implant technology
- Background in marketing and sales within the dental industry
