SMI Companies is seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent to lead field construction for a major industrial project at the Port of Brownsville, Texas, followed by future projects throughout the Gulf Coast and other locations.

The Brownsville project involves erection and installation of a cement grinding and material-handling facility, including structural steel, heavy equipment, conveyors, bucket elevators, piping, foundations, electrical coordination, cranes, rigging, and work within an operating industrial plant.

This is a hands-on field leadership position for a superintendent who can safely organize the work, lead crews and subcontractors, maintain productivity, and identify problems before they affect the schedule or budget.

Responsibilities

  • Direct daily field construction activities.
  • Lead foremen, craft employees, local hires, equipment operators, and subcontractors.
  • Plan manpower, equipment, materials, and work sequences.
  • Coordinate structural, mechanical, civil, piping, electrical, and instrumentation activities.
  • Review drawings, specifications, vendor documents, erection plans, and installation instructions.
  • Coordinate cranes, rigging, heavy lifts, steel erection, elevated work, and equipment setting.
  • Confirm foundations, anchor bolts, elevations, centerlines, and work areas are ready before installation.
  • Maintain two- and three-week look-ahead plans and daily work assignments.
  • Track productivity, manpower, equipment use, deliveries, delays, and subcontractor progress.
  • Identify drawing conflicts, field interferences, missing information, and potential change-order work.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, photographs, time records, and field documentation.
  • Enforce SMI safety requirements and applicable OSHA standards.
  • Coordinate construction around active plant operations, truck traffic, and restricted work areas.
  • Monitor quality and verify installations meet drawings, specifications, and required tolerances.
  • Coordinate inspections, testing, punch-list work, commissioning support, and project closeout.
  • Communicate clearly with the Project Manager, owner, engineers, vendors, and subcontractors.

Work Conditions

  • Initial assignment at the Port of Brownsville, Texas.
  • Future assignments may be located throughout Texas, Louisiana, the Gulf Coast, and other locations.
  • Extended travel and temporary relocation are required.
  • Long shifts and weekend work may be required.
  • Work is performed outdoors and in active industrial construction environments.
  • Early morning crane and aerial work may be required due to coastal wind conditions.


Qualifications:

  • At least 10 years of industrial construction experience.
  • At least 5 years in a superintendent or senior field leadership role.
  • Strong structural and mechanical construction experience.
  • Experience with steel erection, cranes, rigging, heavy equipment installation, and multiple subcontractors.
  • Ability to read structural, civil, mechanical, piping, and equipment drawings.
  • Strong planning, leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and industrial construction safety practices.
  • Ability to travel and remain assigned to projects for extended periods.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Experience with cement plants, power plants, refineries, chemical facilities, manufacturing plants, conveyors, bucket elevators, mills, silos, hoppers, piping, or bulk-material handling systems is preferred.
  • OSHA 30 certification and bilingual English and Spanish communication skills are beneficial.
