SMI Companies is seeking an experienced Construction Project Manager to manage a major industrial project at the Port of Brownsville, Texas, followed by future projects throughout the Gulf Coast and other locations.

The Brownsville project involves the erection and installation of a cement grinding and material-handling facility, including structural steel, heavy equipment, conveyors, bucket elevators, piping, foundations, electrical and instrumentation work, cranes, rigging, and integration with an operating industrial plant.

The Project Manager will be responsible for overall project execution, including safety, schedule, cost, contracts, subcontractors, procurement, documentation, change management, owner communication, and coordination with the Construction Superintendent and field leadership team.

Responsibilities

• Manage the project from mobilization through commissioning and closeout.
• Develop and maintain the overall project schedule, budget, manpower plan, and execution strategy.
• Coordinate closely with the Construction Superintendent to support safe and productive field operations.
• Manage civil, electrical, instrumentation, deep-foundation, crane, transportation, and other subcontractors.
• Review contracts, proposals, drawings, specifications, vendor documents, schedules, and scope requirements.
• Confirm that subcontractor scopes are complete, coordinated, and consistent with SMI’s contractual obligations.
• Track project costs, commitments, forecasts, cash flow, billing, and subcontractor payments.
• Prepare and submit progress billings, schedule updates, reports, and required project documentation.
• Identify scope changes, delays, design conflicts, owner impacts, and extra work.
• Prepare change-order requests with clear descriptions, pricing, schedule impact, and supporting documentation.
• Maintain RFIs, submittals, drawing logs, procurement logs, change logs, meeting minutes, and action-item lists.
• Coordinate equipment deliveries, container staging, material handling, owner-furnished equipment, and construction access.
• Monitor long-lead materials, rental equipment, cranes, tools, consumables, and temporary facilities.
• Lead coordination meetings with the owner, engineers, equipment suppliers, subcontractors, and field team.
• Resolve technical, commercial, logistical, and scheduling issues before they disrupt construction.
• Monitor subcontractor performance and enforce schedule, safety, quality, and documentation requirements.
• Support inspections, testing, equipment checkout, commissioning, punch-list completion, and final turnover.
• Protect SMI’s contractual position by documenting delays, disruptions, owner-directed changes, and differing site conditions.
• Maintain professional communication with the customer while representing SMI’s interests.
• Provide regular project-status reports to company leadership

Work Conditions

• Initial assignment at the Port of Brownsville, Texas.
• Future assignments may be located throughout Texas, Louisiana, the Gulf Coast, and other locations.
• Extended travel and temporary relocation are required.
• The position requires regular presence on the construction site.
• Long shifts, early meetings, and occasional weekend work may be required.
• Work is performed in office, outdoor, and active industrial construction environments.

Qualifications:

• At least 10 years of industrial construction or project-management experience.
• At least 5 years managing industrial construction projects.
• Demonstrated experience managing multimillion-dollar structural, mechanical, civil, piping, or equipment-installation projects.
• Strong understanding of construction contracts, project schedules, cost control, change management, billing, and subcontract administration.
• Ability to read and understand structural, civil, mechanical, piping, electrical, and equipment drawings.
• Experience coordinating multiple subcontractors and work disciplines.
• Strong leadership, organization, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage both field execution and commercial project requirements.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, scheduling software, and electronic project documentation.
• Ability to travel and remain assigned to projects for extended periods.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
• Experience with cement plants, power plants, refineries, chemical facilities, manufacturing plants, conveyors, bucket elevators, mills, silos, hoppers, piping, or bulk-material handling systems is preferred.
• A construction management, engineering, or related degree is beneficial but not required when supported by strong industrial project experience.
