Job Description
The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading, supervising, and actively participating in the day-to-day maintenance activities of the Maintenance Department. Working closely with the Maintenance Manager and Operations team, the Maintenance Supervisor provides hands-on field leadership by working alongside maintenance personnel to support the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of plant systems in accordance with company operational, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Follow and enforce all site Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies, procedures, and company operational standards to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
- Ensure maintenance personnel and contractors perform work in accordance with established safety, quality, environmental, and workmanship standards.
- Use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) correctly and ensure maintenance personnel do the same.
- Verify that the correct maintenance procedures are identified before work begins, apply and require maintenance personnel to apply the adequate procedures, follow up to confirm they are being followed, and periodically review procedure content to ensure continued accuracy.
- Identify, address, and communicate safety hazards, near-miss events, environmental concerns, and unsafe conditions, and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Evaluate corrective and modification maintenance work order requests together with the Maintenance Manager and Operations department to organize the weekly maintenance jobs to be executed in line with the approved weekly schedule.
- Assess unplanned maintenance needs as they arise, advise the Maintenance Superintendent on the corrective work required, approve the maintenance to be performed, and follow up with maintenance personnel to ensure it is completed.
- Follow up on the execution of preventive maintenance activities to ensure planned maintenance is completed on schedule and properly documented in the CMMS.
- Follow up on modification and improvement work performed to confirm it meets requirements and supports equipment reliability.
- Develop and maintain a working understanding of plant process equipment and supporting utility systems, including water systems, compressed air systems, cooling towers, pelletizers, wash plants, and dryer islands, to effectively supervise mechanical maintenance work in these areas.
- Monitor maintenance work order performance within the maintenance team and ensure work orders are properly executed, documented, and closed in the CMMS.
- Advise the Maintenance Manager of any budget or cost control issues, ideas, or opportunities observed in the field; coach maintenance personnel on the importance of respecting the maintenance budget and applying cost control in everyday work; and follow up with the team to ensure budget and cost control expectations are respected.
- Follow up with maintenance personnel to ensure the quality of maintenance practices performed, and review the accuracy of the practices used.
- Verify time entered by maintenance personnel and apply approved time entries in the company's timekeeping/CMMS system.
- Plan and organize shop/team meetings, prepare meeting content, lead the meetings, and follow up with employees on outstanding items from previous meetings.
- Assess maintenance staffing and recruitment needs and participate in interviews as a co-interviewer when required.
- Support employee recruitment, onboarding, training, and retention activities for the maintenance team.
- Advise the Maintenance Manager on training needs for own and immediate employees, participate in required training, and follow up to ensure training and certification requirements are completed and kept current.
- Apply the required maintenance Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the position, and follow up with own and immediate employees' KPIs to ensure they are respected and applied.
- Apply own performance objectives as part of the company's employee evaluation process.
- Maintain clean, organized, and professional maintenance work areas and ensure compliance with housekeeping standards.
- Carry out responsibilities in accordance with company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Perform other duties, responsibilities, and tasks as assigned to support safe and efficient plant operations.
