Develop and coordinate Whooping Crane awareness focused on creating positive behaviors towards the species. Identify needs and gaps in initiatives and make adjustments necessary for effectiveness. Build partnerships and support with state, federal, county, city and private partners.

Partner with social scientists to assess citizens’ knowledge, values, and behaviors towards Whooping Cranes and other wildlife.

Communicate through written materials, large scale marketing materials, social media outreach and presentations for different audiences, information about Whooping Cranes and why their protection is important. Audiences will include school groups, civic organizations, hunting groups and birding/conservation clubs.

Provide virtual opportunities when in-person activities are not possible due to the pandemic or other unforeseen conditions. Be willing to pivot between in-person and virtual activities as needed.

Identify, recruit, train, supervise and retain community outreach volunteers and interns.

Evaluate knowledge, value and behavior changes and modify initiatives to ensure effectiveness.

Maintain a database of metrics for the program.

Develop annual work plans and budgets.

Participate in conservation planning for the outreach program.

Document in photos and writing efforts and results of the initiative for the International Crane Foundation’s internal and external communications and fundraising.

Assist as requested to raise funding for the initiatives.

Work collaboratively with local, state and federal agencies to achieve goals for the outreach program.


Demonstrated community leadership and ability to work with a diversity of stakeholders in rural Louisiana communities.

Demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings and coordinate the actions of diverse groups of stakeholders using both in-person and remote access approaches.

Excellent verbal communication skills, including speaking clearly and persuasively to individuals and groups; listening effectively; responding well to questions from the general public and experts.

Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to effectively draft correspondence and reports in a clear, concise, logical and grammatically correct manner; and the ability to vary writing style to meet the audience’s needs and media.

Comfort working with local and national journalists to produce media pieces on Whooping Cranes.

Ability to develop new ideas or approaches to engage, educate and inspire behavior change in community members.

Ability to travel up to 50% of the time, including travel throughout Louisiana and east Texas, with some potential travel to the International Crane Foundation’s office in Rockport, Texas. Some weekends and evenings will be required.

Valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Experience and comfort using email, word processing, spreadsheet, and PowerPoint software (MS Office) and internet search engines.

Attention to detail and thoroughness.

Ability to adapt quickly, effectively and continually to changes in work duties, processes and technologies.

Ability to operate independently, as you will be the only International Crane Foundation staff member in the state of Louisiana.

Work as a constructive member of a team and commit to the free sharing of information and technical expertise as needed.

Demonstrate respect and sensitivity for others, inspire trust and work with integrity.

Bachelor’s Degree in a biological field, communications, sociology or other relevant field and preferably three years related experience.

Experience working with volunteers to achieve desired results; delegate work; train and encourage skill development; access and provide feedback on individual performance.

Experience working effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders to achieve a challenging goal.

Experience working with youth, rural, hunter and farmer audiences.

Experience with grant writing or other forms of fundraising.
